Is Spotify the boogieman in the podcast world? Are they coming to get you and your listeners? Yeah.. kind of. But not all hope is lost, you’re gonna be just fine. We’ll take you to Austin for a little SXSW panel.

And a little bit of a preview of the “other” big conference happening this month in Los Angeles.

There’s some staffing math going on today… additions, subtractions, etc…

Plus… RadioDaily music director Ryan Kramer tees up a little music news and throws together some tunes you need to hear on this edition of the Weekend Mixtape.

It’s the new daily podcast for the Radio and Records industry … the RadioDaily … for the 15th of March, 2019.

The RadioDaily is powered by vCreative … if you’ve never had a look at what they do, then you’re doing it all wrong. We’re talking workflows to keep the trains on time at your radio station… from paperless production orders with vPPO to tracking fulfillment and the promo process with vPromotions. They’re radio people who married software people and made some really amazing tools for your radio staiton… and I mean that pretty literally. Check them out online at vCreativeInc.com.

<audio> Spotify chief content officer Dawn Ostroff on a SXSW panel this week, explaining why they’ve shelled out hundreds of millions of dollars to buy Gimlet Media and Anchor. She sat on the panel with the executives for those two companies, who will remain in place as the three companies come together in a collaborative effort to advance podcasting forward even more into the mainstream. Part of that play, includes exactly what you’d expect… creating compelling content for their audience, and your listeners, to seek out and spend time with. <audio> What original content beyond some creative imaging do you do at your station? Do you just repurpose morning show breaks, or are you offering something different than what your listeners can get on the air? All good questions to ask yourself as podcasting dominates the conversation at SX this week, which continues through Sunday. Worth noting, by the way… you can listen to this very podcast, the RadioDaily, on Spotify already, and you should make sure any podcasts you or your station produce are available there as well. They may end up owning the platform… but you can use that to your advantage! See the whole panel on youtube or online at SXSW.com.

From Austin to a different conference in LA … All Access has a quick preview of some of what’s to come at Worldwide Radio Summit the end of this month. Just announced yesterday, All Access President & Publisher Joel Denver will be sitting down for a fireside chat, if you will, on Friday March 29th with Chief Programming Officer and President of the National Programming Group for iHeartMedia, Tom Poleman. I DARE you to get that title on a business card, by the way. Denver will lead the conversation about the state of the industry and promises to go in depth with one of radio’s most recognizable leaders in the process.

Another nugget to come at WWRS, this and every year, are the results of the annual Jacobs Media Tech Survey. That’ll be taking place on Thursday March 28th and is always really fascinating to me… Yesterday, in a sneak peek, Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs checked in with the data that of those surveyed this year, more than one quarter of respondents expressed an interest in PURCHASING station merchandise if they could. Now granted, nearly half of those surveyed said they were not, but is radio leaving a little something on the table? That’s kind of like having your cake and eating it too, isn’t it? Wait, you’re gonna pay ME to wear my logo? Sweet! That’s just one small part of the overall TechSurvey 2019 results… you’ll get the whole thing in person on Thursday March 28th at 11 AM at WorldWide Radio Summit. Which, by the way, registration fees go up in a couple of days so if you’re looking to head to LA end of this month, get registered now online at WorldWideRadioSummit dot com.

People getting promoted, people renting moving vans and cruising across the country… the usual moves around the industry for your Friday, coming up next with Jockline in the RadioDaily.

Cameron Moore is the new MD for Beasley’s Country 103-7 in Charlotte, North Carolina effective immediately. In this new role, she’ll also continue as MD and midday personality for CHR sister station KISS 95 point 1.

Elsewhere in Charlotte, Eugene Robinson exits the Carolina Panthers radio crew after 17 seasons as part of the team. Robinson, who played in the NFL, has the distinct honor of being a member of both the 1997 Green Bay Packers and 1998 Atlanta Falcons, both of whom were beaten in back to back years in the Super Bowl by my beloved Denver Broncos.

Tracy Johnson Media Group welcomes veteran programmer Mike Shepard to the team. Most recently he was VP of Programming for BCA radio in San Diego and also runs his own research company.

iHeartMedia’s 97-9 KISS FM in Jacksonville has promoted Mel Rose from basic night jock to Music Director. Those in the record industry no doubt should take advantage before she establishes firm call times.

There’s a new Ops Manager at Townsquare Media Quad Cities… enter former Entercom Houston PD Ryan McCredden, effective next week. If you’re wondering… the Quad Cities region is technically is made up of five cities crossing over the Illinois and Iowa borders. Right, 5 cities… but QUAD. Shouldn’t it be QUINT? I digress.

A new APD/MD and PM drive host at Z104 in Madison Wisconsin as iHeartMedia moves Sean Strife into the post from the last two years as PD of Top 40 sister station Hot 95 point 7 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Prior to that he worked as a producer for Ryan Seacrest in LA.

Finally, Dan Mitchinson is out at News/Talk KFBK in Sacramento. On facebook, he posts “everything’s got to end sometime, otherwise nothing would ever get started, and with that semi favorite quote of mine, my time at KFBK has come to an end.” See … I instantly was reminded, and this is me now, of the line from the movie cocktail – all things end badly otherwise they wouldn’t end. Oh that’s just relationships? Right. Sorry.

Anyway. If you or someone you know is on the move, please let us know online at theRadioDaily.com. Next… Ryan Kramer takes a look slash listen around the music industry with some light, causal Friday Grooves… the Weekend Mix Tape is next.
