A feel good story at the top of the news today, illustrating why we all got into this business in the first place and why the RadioDaily podcast is being created!

Performers for the iHeartRadio Music Awards have been announced…

And stats released yesterday on the prominence of women in radio… some of them, well, a bit surprising honestly. Even frustrating.

Today, it’s another test of the new podcast serving radio & records…

The Radio Daily is taking shape as it was intended… as a collabrative composite of the best and brightest the radio and records industry has to offer… and that includes the many sponsors and partnerships we’re making in these planning stages. For more info on how you and/or your company can participate in our launch, and for more sponsorship or advertising information, drop an email to me, Chris Kelly, at chris@theradiodaily.com

In a stunning example of radio doing some good in the local community they broadcast in, look no further than 106-5 The Arch in St Louis and morning hosts Stacy & Jonah. Candace King, a St Louis resident and listener, was injured a few weeks ago after being hit being hit by a car as she crossed the street. She was knocked unconscious and left by the driver… and that’s where things get worse. While unconscious, someone stole her rent money from her pocket and wedding ring from her finger. While on the air, she explained her husband was killed by a drunk driver two years after they wed and she’s worn that ring faithfully ever since, now for more than 30 years since! Stacy and Jonah were heartbroken by the story and moved while talking to Candace. Fortunately, the general manager of the Diamonds Direct store, located next door to the radio station walked right over to the radio station while they were still speaking with Candace and immediately donated her choice of a replacement ring. Each year, the Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio Group compile and analyze the number of women in radio broadcasting who are rising to the ranks of management, and the data for 2018 has been released… These numbers are reflective of 11,225 AM and FM radio stations across America. 19.05% (2,081 stations) have women holding the General Manager position in 2018.  This is an increase of almost a total percentage point from 2017, which was 18.1%. Notably, this number continues to show consistent growth from 2004, when the percentage of female general managers was only 14.9%.  Overall, the best management opportunities for women in radio have been in sales management, according to the data.  32.6% (3,481 stations) had a female sales manager in 2018, and that number is up slightly from 31.9% in 2017. Now… The greatest challenge for women in radio management continues to be at the Program Director position. And I gotta shake my head at this one a bit… According to the data, women currently program only 10.6% (1,139 stations) and that percentage has basically remained flat for the last twelve years. You can find the full results of the survey online at radioMIW dot com.

The 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards are set to air on March 14th on FOX from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The awards will also air live on iHeartMedia radio stations across the US and of course, on iHeartRadio itself. iHeart and Fox announced yesterday that some performers this year will include Garth Brooks, Ariana Grande, Halsey, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Kacey Musgraves, among others, and with more to be announced. One award also announced, and of early note: Taylor Swift will receive the iHeartRadio Tour of the Year award. Her Reputation tour sold over two MILLION tickets and grossed 260 million dollars… it was the highest selling US tour in history, by any artist. The iHeartRadio Music Awards again are allowing listeners to iheartRadio stations to decided winners in a handful of established and brand new categories. Fans can vote on Twitter or online at iHeartRadio.com slash awards.

Final thoughts for this episode of the RadioDaily… it has totally been just a test run, to get used to the process of putting together an episode with some of the elements we’ll ultimately use time and again. If this were an actual, full blown, post launch episode… you would have also heard a smattering of sponsors and messaging from our partners, plus a handful of features from guest contributors along the way.
